A. Graduate Record Examination is a common measure for comparing the qualifications of graduate program applicants
B. Sections

    1. Analytical Writing Analyze An Argument
      a. 30 minute essay
    2. Analytical Writing Perspective On An Issue
      b. 45 minute essay
    3. Verbal
      a. 30 minutes for 30 multiple choice questions
      b. sentence completion, analogy, reading comprehension, and antonym
    4. Quantitative
        a. 45 minutes for 28 multiple choice questions
        b. quantitative comparison, problem solving, and data interpretation
C. Scoring
    1. Verbal and Quantitative sections
        a. scored on a 200-800 point scale
        b. scale in 10 point increments
    2. Analytical Writing sections
        a. scored on a 0-6 point scale
        b. scale in ½ point increments
D. Practice
    1. Study books available in library
    2. Free class for verbal section offered through Student Services
    3. Free Practice Test
        a. sponsored by Kaplan
        b. given score analysis
        c. Saturday, October 21 at 8:00 a.m. in Schindler Education Center
        d. enroll by calling 1-800-KAP-TEST or go to kaptest.com/practice
E. GRE Changes
    1. Effective September 2007
    2. Fewer verbal vocabulary and more reading passages
    3. Reading passages will cover more diverse topics
    4. Quantitative section will include a calculator
    5. Quantitative section will have more real-life situation questions

IV. Guest Speaker, Susie Schwieger, from Career Services

A. Volunteer experience, internships, and research experience
    1. Important for jobs and graduate schools
        a. graduate schools becoming more competitive
    2. Students were encouraged to call Career Services to set up an appointment to meet to discuss opportunities for them
B. Job and Internship Fair
    1. March 6
C. Many options available for psychology graduates
    1. Career Services and resume handouts

    2. Current shortage of psychology related employees in federal government
        a. government is looking for skilled psychology graduates
D. Resumes
    1. Encouraged to upload resume to CareerLink
    2. Focus on skills on resume
    3. High school information does not belong on a resume
    4. Most recent information should be listed first
    5. Foreign language fluency is an asset
        a. UNI's Modern Language department has language certificates to make psychology majors more marketable
    6. Cultivate good references
        a. should have 3-5 strong references

A. T-shirt design ideas will be accepted until Friday, October 13
    1. Take to psych department or give/e-mail to Psychology Club officers
